MUSIC FEATURE: Behind The Noise – Mass Sky Raid

Gold Coast rock quartet Mass Sky Raid return with their soaring new single Not Alone, their first new material since their 2018 debut full-length Science Of Fiction. Not only are the band back with their latest single, they also welcome two new members (Nic Ross on drums and Joshua Whitney on bass), an exciting development that opens up their sound to even more influences and possibilities. We caught up with vocalist Adam Lomas to find out more about Not Alone

Can you give us your quick elevator pitch on this track? Why does this one standout for you as a band?

We thought our new single Not Alone was a great follow up single from our first full-length album Science of Fiction, which hopefully shows the progression we have made. Also, although this song was written some time ago I think it’s very reflective to the current state of the world during the pandemic, and I think listeners will be able to identify and relate with the themes, concepts and feel of the song.

How did you tackle the writing process for the song? Was there anything unique about this track compared to your usual/previous approach?

Alex (guitar) and I (Adam) have been writing together for many years and collaborated together on this track. We have learnt to push each other creatively and compete for ideas, which I think is healthy and brings out the best in a song. Joshua (bass) and Nic (drums) are both new members and we have started working on new material as a band, which I am excited about as it brings in totally new influences and abilities.

Can you tell us how the song’s theme came about?

A lot of our music’s themes are about searching for dreams and meaning. I think it’s an honest reflection on where we are as a band and also relatable to listeners.
Not Alone explores the struggle one has when reaching for your dreams and the uncertainty that it creates when you step outside your own place of comfort, to create a more meaningful life. It looks at the battle to find strength, to take that unfamiliar and uncertain path which can lead to an ultimately more fulfilling existence.

Tell us about the video, do the themes of the single transfer to the video?

I think the theme of the song definitely relates to the video’s visual aspects of facing fears and searching for meaning inside the franticness of a city at night and the energy it creates.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories from the video shoot?

Alex had an outline of a city concept which really suited the song’s themes, while not being too obvious and literal. We then gave our outline to Lyricvids.com who worked with us and progressed the lyric video themes into what you see now.

Anything else you’d like to add for our readers?

We are just super excited to get new content out that we are really proud of in these challenging times. This song is the first of many new songs we have finished and we will be releasing. We’re currently working on a follow-up single and music video which we can’t wait to show people, as it shows another completely different side of our band.
