Melodic alt-pop/rock newcomer Zarif has released a video for her new single Nothing But A Memory, taken from her forthcoming debut EP Square One.
The single is an honest account of her battle with breast cancer, which has seen her fight and beat the disease twice.
“Dealing with a cancer diagnosis and treatment means your whole life stops – everything else takes a back seat while you enter battle mode,” Zarif explains. “You are faced with the concept of your own mortality and identity, but there’s also the opportunity for perspective. As an artist, this meant clarity on who I am and what I want to create. Writing songs is so cathartic, and the whole EP is me trying to make sense of it all and move forwards.
“Nothing But A Memory is one of those times when the video idea came before the song choice. We shot the video about a week before I was due to start chemotherapy. I wanted to somehow take control of the inevitable, and turn something destructive into something creative; something constructive. I decided to pay homage to the famous head shaving scene in Empire Records (one of my favourite ‘90s movies).”
