Post-hardcore trio Other Half have announced their signing to Big Scary Monsters alongside revealing details of their new album Soft Action.
To give fans a taste of what’s to come, the band are also streaming their AA side single Like A Dog/Slab Thick.
“I really like that ‘Like A Dog’ is the first thing people will hear of the new album. It’s a 40 second blast of nasty, grinding hardcore that I wrote because Alfie said we needed more fast songs. It sets up exactly where most of the characters that inhabit the album exist; out of step with a world that no longer tolerates the shit they get up to and still reeling from it. ‘A bad time to be a bad guy,” says vocalist Cal of Like A Dog.
Commenting on Slab Thick, Cal adds, “Someone described our last record as one of the great ‘drug albums’. Going by the lyrics for ‘Slab Thick’, that might make this record our ‘sex album’. A debased 3 bears-style allegory about the search for something that doesn’t exist,” says Cal. “It doubles up as a comment on the process of writing our second album and how most of the time it’s good to just stick to what you know. To further complicate the metaphor, it’s actually a song we were originally very wary of, as it just didn’t sound very Other Half. We soon realised we just couldn’t play it very well and ultimately, Other Half is just what happens when me, Alfie and Soapy play rock songs together. As it happens, I think ‘Slab Thick’ is a pretty good rock song.”
