Exist Immortal released their self-titled album last month, a captivating blend of metalcore and technical metal with a tinge of pop. The quintet released a series of singles ahead of the album including Emerge, which they describe as having a “nostalgic vibe”. We caught up with Exist Immortal to find out more about the track, including the writing process, themes and stories from behind the scenes.
Can you give us your quick elevator pitch on this track? Why does this one standout for you?
As the song developed over time, it became apparent that it would feel like it had a “nostalgic” vibe. The approach to this song in particular was focused on a feel of longing for fulfilment and focus for our wellbeing as a group.
How did you tackle the writing process for the song? Was there anything unique about this track compared to your usual/previous approach?
With a couple of the new songs, Kurt first prepared a sample to vibe too. Emerge happened to be one of the first songs to come into fruition, and was one of the tracks to appear on the new album that became a real team contribution. This elevated the whole feel of the song to a higher place, vocally and sonically.
Can you tell us how the song’s theme came about?
The theme was kind of dictated by the vibe of the instrumental, it was clear thematically it had to be nostalgic and pull on the heartstrings.
Tell us about the video, do the themes of the single transfer to the video?
Charlie (our drummer) has always had an idea “of preparing a new track to performing the song in front of an audience.” We went with this idea and thus Emerge became the flagship idea of “Here Now, Here Later”.
Do you have any behind the scenes stories from the video shoot?
David practicing his dance moves- that actually ended up in the video! Charlie won the game of pool, David won the game of darts. It was actually a fairly swift shoot, it was just good to get some mates there!
