The Glasgow Garage is thirty years old this year and since opening in 1994 has hosted thousands of bands from different genres and tonight we had three more to add to that list. As Everything Unfolds have been making music since 2013 releasing their first album Within Each Lies The Other in 2021 which was followed up by Ultraviolet in 2023, both on the Long Branch Record label.
The Ultraviolet – Live In The UK 2024 tour came to the G2; the middle sized venue, and the room was at least half full for the first support band DARLAH who provided the energy as the four-piece band worked through tracks from their debut EP Human Nature which was freshly released in November. A surprise cover version of Evanescence’s track Bring Me To Life was well received by the crowd and sparked the first sing-along of the night. The set ended with Sequel which is the bands biggest release to date and vocalist Danni Hicks thanked the audience for turning up early. You can catch DARLAH at Burn It Down Festival in August. 7/10
The second support act were South Arcade, the pop-punk band only formed in 2021 but have already gained a good legion of fans wherever they play. The enthusiasm coming from the stage especially from vocalist Harmony Cavell was infectious as the set opened with 2023 release Silverlight and a group of fans were avidly bopping their heads along. The eight-track, half hour set went by very quickly as Cavell kept the crowd interested with little chats between songs, asking who had saw the band play live before and revealing details about a free t-shirt competition. Freshly released track Nepo Baby went down well and Danger prompted a sing-along, much to the delight of the band. Katy Perry’s track I Kissed A Girl was the bands choice of a cover which they also played when we saw them in Glasgow last year. The fact that it’s a well known song got the crowd singing along and some phones out to record the moment. The best song was left to the end of the set with Sound Of An Empty Room, with the catchy chorus prompting one last chance for the fans to show their appreciation. It was a very lively set and we hope to see the band release an album or EP in 2024. South Arcade will be heading out on a UK tour in March and are well worth seeing. 8/10
When As Everything Unfolds toured with Electric Callboy, the German techno/metal wizards, they perhaps didn’t realise the positive impact it would have on their fanbase growth which is exactly what happened and it has put the band firmly on a pedestal of their own. The G2 was filling up nicely as the band took to the stage one by one each getting a big cheer from the crowd. We were expecting a setlist of tracks predominantly from the Ultraviolet album and the set got off to a ripping start with three songs from said album with Slow Down, Saint Or Rogue and Blossom. The crowd were bringing the energy to the room as a large mosh pit opened up during the first song and this was basically how it was for the full performance of the twelve track set. The band commented during the set how impressed they were with the crowd’s efforts tonight and we must agree that it was a highly charged night and one to remember and those that didn’t want too much energetic participation nodded along in appreciation instead. In the end we had eight tracks from Ultraviolet but there was still time for four numbers from 2021’s Within Each Lies The Other. The melodic All I’ve Ever Known was one of the highlights of the set with some great guitar riffs closing the main act.
The encore consisted of two hard hitters, firstly Felt Like Home which seemed to have every person in the room singing along and vocalist Charlie Rolfe blasting out the lyrics “Pushed into the corner/Oh, it’s only ever felt like home to me” and finally On The Inside with it’s catchy electro-synth start giving the fans one last chance to tear it up in the pits, which saw a sea of bodies crash into each other in the middle of the room which was a great finish to the night.
As Everything Unfolds are supporting Skindred at Wembley Arena in March which is a tribute to how much this band have grown in the past year or so and this will no doubt help their fanbase to grow even more during 2024. It’s no coincidence that all three bands that played tonight are female-led we think that 2024 will be the year that the ‘levelling up’ process within the music industry reaches its peak. 9/10
