LIVE REVIEW: Hinds, Lloyd’s House, Stereo Glasgow, 03/02/2024

Spanish indie-pop/rock band Hinds are currently on tour in the UK and they dropped by Stereo in Glasgow for the only Scottish date of the tour which was the first on the tour to sell out. A gig in Glasgow on a Saturday night usually means one thing… mayhem! Stereo is a small basement venue which can hold just under three hundred people and the place was rammed full tonight with not much space for dancing. There were a lot of Spanish accents in the crowd tonight which proves that Hinds have a dedicated fanbase and perhaps some had even travelled from their home town of Madrid to support them.

Tonight’s support bands were Lloyd’s House and Big Girls Blouse but the latter had to pull out of the gig due to illness, which was a pity really as their music was definitely fitting for a Hinds concert. So it was down to Lloyd’s House to get the crowd warmed up tonight, which they did a great job of during their half hour set. The band released The Masochist EP in October 2023 and we would get to hear all five tracks from that EP as well as a few others. Fronted by Lloyd Ledingham, the Glasgow band began with Lloyd himself during lockdown and have developed into a five-piece band. 7/10

Carlotta Cosials and Ana Garcia Perrote formed the band in 2011 and were known as Deers initially before they changed the band name to Hinds (female deer) in 2015 for legal reasons. By 8.30pm Stereo was jammed full as Your Love Is King by Sade blasted from the speakers sparking a singalong moment before Hinds made their appearance on stage to the delight of the crowd. The set began with great enthusiasm from the crowd singing along to the opening two tracks The Club and New For You from the 2018 I Don’t Run album.

Cosials tried really hard to entertain the crowd between songs in broken English telling some stories around the band which everyone appreciated from the multi-talented singer who is also an actress and writer. The cohesion in the guitar playing and vocals between Cosials and Perrote was the highlight of the night and the duo are really tight as musicians. Riding Solo and Good Bad Times were two tracks that stood out in the set alongside Burn which Cosials dedicated to all women that have gone to great lengths to achieve great things in their lives to loud cheers and screams from the fans.

There was a great cover of The Clash song Spanish Bombs which was written about the dark days Spain suffered under Franco and the set ended with Davey Crockett, a cover of Thee Headcoatees track. We were delighted to hear some unreleased songs and potentially a new album in the near future. The band had made an afternoon appearance at the Blitzkrieg Record shop in Glasgow signing records and playing a couple of songs. They showed their appreciation to the fans at the end of the show and said Glasgow was one of the best cities that they had played in. Hinds bring a really fun vibe to their gigs and are always smiling, the fans won’t forget this one for a while. Haste Ye Back! 9/10
