Nestled in the corner beside the ever-popular SWG3 venue is The Poetry Club, a 150-capacity venue which hosts many up-and-coming acts and is a nice intimate setting for those types of gigs such as tonight as EEVAH brought their sixteen-date Simplify Life tour to Glasgow to showcase their alternative-indie music on their first ever tour.
Up and coming Glasgow synth-pop trio Neverfine had to pull out of the support slot due to illness with fellow Glaswegians Distant Images moving up the bill to second billing, we had saw the band play an acoustic set in support to Reverend and the Makers last July in this same venue and they provided a great set. They have since released a new track – Chaos Silence – in March which we would get to hear live tonight. The set began with Echoes followed by Fragments, a track they don’t play live very often commented Jilly. The mix of indie-pop/rock and dance tunes was a good mixture during One Again and Sights Unseen, which we thought was the best part of their short set. 7/10
Halifax indie-pop trio EEVAH brought their unique sound to the 100 or so people that filled The Poetry Club and they announced during their set that the band’s debut EP Simplify Life would be released on 2nd May. EEVAH are vocalist Nicole Hope Smith and guitarist Richard McNamara (who is also the backing vocalist for Embrace!), they announced drummer Faye would be joining them in November which brings a wider dimension to their live shows. The thirteen-track set began with Say It’s Just Us; their February release as the band got the crowd onside from the word go with the catchy chorus getting the crowd moving. I Wanna Be Yours is another new release we would hear later in the set, both tracks going down well. Out of Focus and Wild Things are their two biggest releases to date and they were sung beautifully by Hope Smith, backed up with some outstanding guitar work from McNamara, in between these two tracks was Can’t Breathe, their first ever release in 2018. Another new release Heartbeat Is Missing is by far the heaviest release from EEVAH to date and could quickly become an anthem on this current tour, many of the dates being sold out already.
Vocalist Hope Smith has been giving out a flower to one fan each night of the tour to the best dancer and towards the end of the set the fans were asked to ‘give their best moves’ as everyone boogied along, before some guy appeared from the back of the crowd and creating a good vibe by doing the splits at the front of the stage (three times!) This added to the atmosphere for the remainder of the gig and we can report that the said chap passed on the flower to a fellow fan. The night ended on a high with I Didn’t See It Coming and Promises, ending a great night of music. EEVAH moved on to a sold out night at OPORTO and continuing the tour, ending in Cambridge on 29th April. This band will be playing bigger venues soon enough. 9/10
