FESTIVAL PREVIEW: Victorious Festival 2024

Taking place over the August bank holiday weekend (23rd to 25th August) at Southsea Common, Victorious Festival is back and once again features a stacked line-up whether you’re looking for great live music, belly laughs or a family day out.

Offering up something for everyone including comedy from the likes of Russell Howard, Frankie Boyle and Al Murray over in the comedy tent. Fancy a bit of karaoke? Why not check out Barrioke with Shaun Williamson on Sunday afternoon in the comedy tent, who knows you could be playing Victorious next year!

When we’ve visited Victorious before, we’ve loved that it truly is the ultimate family festival with the whole Victorious Kids Arena dedicated to giving the younger fans a space for them to enjoy. From dance classes to character appearances, there’s truly something for all the mini festival goers across the weekend.

Victorious is again partnering with Tonic Music For Mental Health; a local charity aiming to get people involved in music for the mental health benefits. Whilst on site the Neighbourhood Eats area gives independent Portsmouth eateries a subsided slot when they otherwise might not be able to partake in the festival.

On the music front, the Common Stage will be co-headlined by Fatboy Slim and Snow Patrol on Friday, Jamie T on Saturday and Biffy Clyro on Sunday. Across the line-up there are also artists including Wet Leg, The Snuts, Louis Tomlinson, IDLES, The Lathums and Crystal Tides just to name a few. An incredibly special part of Victorious is their afternoon special guests, with huge names taking to the stage early in the day! This year Razorlight take the slot on Friday, Tom Walker on Saturday then The Kooks on Sunday. There will also be a party by the Solent on the Seaside stage with Groove Armada (DJ Set), Dub FX and weekend closer Professor Green.

The festival is continuing to champion up and coming artists over on the Introducing Stage, along with giving a Castle Stage slot to the Road To Victorious winner Harvey Jay Dodgson. Their competition for those within the PO postcode area saw Harvey crowned as the winner and given industry support and a slot on the festival bill.

We’re taking a deeper dive into the line-up and looking at six artists we can’t wait to see across the weekend!

The Snuts
Common Stage
Friday 15:30 – 16:15

The Scottish indie-rock quartet are having a brilliant year. Following the release of their third album Millennials earlier this year, the band will be bringing their slick live show to the Common Stage on Friday. Their sing-along friendly tracks including Gloria, Glasgow and Burn The Empire will no doubt ignite the crowd led by frontman Jack Cochrane. Their latest album was released via the bands own label Happy Artist Records, giving them the creative freedom and a step back from pressure. After striking up a great friendship and going out on tour with fellow Friday artist Louis Tomlinson alongside performing at Glastonbury, it looks like it’ll be a great set from the band who are no strangers to a live stage, so make sure you check out their set. The Lottery Winners
Castle Stage
Friday 17:05 – 17:50

If success was measured by sheer hard work and performing as many gigs as possible the Lottery Winners would surely be stratospheric. Equally at ease playing small venues (such as Guildford Boileroom where we took the attached photo of Thom Rylance) as they are at the mighty London O2 Arena (support for Nickelback), The Lottery Winners are one of those bands that never disappoint. Their most recent album Anxiety Replacement Therapy which saw them collaborate with Frank Turner, Shaun Ryder and Boy George reached number 1 in the official UK Charts and was described by Rylance as a ‘Self-help’ for those struggling in life. Songs such as Letter to Myself, Worry and Anxiety Replacement Therapy resonate so loudly with society at the moment and played in a live environment ensure the crowd understand You’re Not Alone. A unique band full of talented musicians fronted by a man of the people, no matter how many times you get to see them live, they never disappoint. (KOS)

CMAT
Common Stage
Saturday 15:30 – 16:15

We adore Irish singer songwriter Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson (CMAT) after seeing her live Brits War Child performance at Bush Hall earlier this year. Her music combines humour with pop culture and a country mash-up to create a unique sound and, boy, her live performance is fun. She has been nominated (quite rightly) for numerous music awards winning a Choice Music Award for best album in 2022, indeed, had she not been up against Taylor Swift earlier this year she may have won International Artist at the Brit Awards. Live performances aplenty, including Glastonbury, huge outdoor support slots for Florence and the Machine, festival headliners across the UK and Europe and breakthroughs in the USA are testament to her quality as a live performer. At Bush Hall earlier this year she climbed off the stage and performed amongst the enthralled crowd and at Victorious we are looking forward to similar audience interaction. (KOS)

Holly Humberstone
Common Stage
Saturday 16:45 – 17:30

The singer-songwriter’s set on Friday will bring some magic to the main stage on Saturday afternoon. Holly’s beautifully soulful voice and sincere lyrics are just some of the reasons Humberstone has been playing further up bills and winning over fans worldwide especially since the release of her debut album Paint My Bedroom Black in 2023. The 2022 Brits Rising Star Winner has a captivating stage presence about her, letting the audience into experiences she’s been through but with the big singalong moments every festival audience will love. We can’t wait to see which tracks from her discography make the cut but one things for sure is that this set will be one we’ll definitely be checking out. (NC)

Brooke Combe
Common Stage
Sunday 12:15 – 12:45

Singer Songwriter guitar- playing Brooke Combe is definitely one to catch at Victorious and one of Scotland’s best ever exports. We caught her late last year at the small venue at Komedia in Brighton and were blown away by her effortless live performance, one of those nights when we were lucky enough to see a  big star (in the making) at a small venue. Her voice is soulful, husky and she has been described as a combination of the smoky vocals of Rebecca Ferguson, the allure of Amy Winehouse and the sultry mood of Sade. Award winner at the Scottish music awards, festival appearances at TRNSMT, Glastonbury, Tramlines, Reading, Leeds and Radio 1’s Big Weekend are testament to her live performances which are full of energy and sounds that are even better live than her superb Spotify list of songs. Definitely definitely one to watch! (KOS)

The Hunna
Castle Stage
Sunday 16:05 – 16:35

Rockers The Hunna are going to unleash some chaos during their Castle Stage set. Known for their crowd interaction with Ryan Potter acting as the ringleader of the audience during their sets, we just know Victorious will fall in love with The Hunna like we already have. The band have teased that a lot of things have been going on behind the scenes since the release of their 2022 self-titled album, so could this mean we get a taste of new material on Southsea Common? If that’s not a good enough reason to head along to their set we don’t know what is! (NC)
