LIVE REVIEW: Pixey, Youth For Sale, Becki Rutherford, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, 27/09/2024
Liverpool-based singer-songwriter Elizabeth Sinead Hillesdon performs under the name of Pixey and released debut album Million Dollar Baby in August and is now in the middle of a UK tour of the same name. Pixey has chosen the most iconic venue in Scotland for the only tour date north of the border, none other than King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut on St Vincent’s Street in Glasgow.
The first of two support acts was Glaswegian singer-songwriter Becki Rutherford, the four-piece band played a half hour of indie-pop tracks to help get the fans warmed up, they may have only released three songs to date (What A Week, Don’t Want You Around and Afterthought) but it was a nice chilled start to the night. 7/10
Youth For Sale are another Glasgow band that are gaining a growing following locally with their shoegaze/indie style, their set went down really well at the Tenement Trail in October last year. Back To You was the latest release back in June and they released debut EP I Feel Fine in December 2021. It’s a great start with Danny’s Car, as the singer and keyboard player swap places for a track that helps to keep the crowd onside. This is our third time seeing Youth For Sale and have been very impressed by their style of music, the seven minute epic track Again Tomorrow ends the set on a high and is by far the bands best song. TRNSMT should be taking a look at this band for the River Stage next year. 8/10
Pixey took to the stage at 9.30pm and it’s a decent crowd for a band on their first headline tour, Pixey has an extraordinary voice and we have been looking forward to hearing tracks from debut album Million Dollar Baby. The vocals are very low and hard to make out at times during opening tracks Man Power and Just Move. The sound engineer soon sorts the problems for The Thrill Of It, an explosive three minutes of feel good indie-pop that gets King Tut’s moving to the beat, an early contender for the highlight of the set. Pixey’s stage energy is memorable as she covers every inch of the stage. We would get to hear nine tracks from the debut album including the title song Million Dollar Baby, this one goes down really well, the crowd have been relatively sleepy up until now but this song sees the place erupt.
Oxygen is played acoustically tonight, Pixey comments that it is a very sad song for her to play as the crowd listen intensely to every word, it’s a very emotional moment for her. King Tut’s springs back to life for Daisy Chain, by far their biggest release to date with well over 3 million streams on Spotify alone. This is quickly followed by Bring Back The Beat, a very easy song to join in with as the crowd do, it’s the kind of song you would hear in a nightclub and goes down really well with the Glasgow crowd. Damage is the last track of the set, the only one we didn’t get to hear tonight from Million Dollar Baby was The War In My Mind that is a superb track in itself. Pixey will be back playing in Glasgow at The Garage on 20th October supporting LAUREL. 9/10
