MUSIC FEATURE: Behind The Noise – CLT DRP

Drawing influence from a wide range of artists, from The Prodigy and Peaches through to Meshuggah, Brighton’s CLT DRP are making waves with their anthemic feminist electro-punk. Their single Where The Boys Are is a nod to some of vocalist Annie Dorrett‘s female inspirations, and an excellent taste of what to expect from the band’s debut album Without The Eyes. We caught up with Annie to discuss Where The Boys Are, including behind the scenes stories, themes and more. 

Can you give us your quick elevator pitch on this track? Why does this one stand out for you as a band?

Where The Boys Are is a jam-packed punch of a song and that’s why it stands out on the album. It’s got a few different elements to it technically and lyrically it’s kinda an anthem in its own way.

How did you tackle the writing process for the song? Was there anything unique about this track compared to your usual/previous approach? 

I don’t have the best memory looking back at the process of this one…I think Scott had a few different strong ideas and they all came into one somehow. I don’t usually get lyric ideas that stick right away but I remember with this one, the chorus came out quick and stuck. 

Can you tell us how the song’s theme came about? 

This song, in particular, is a little head nod to some of my female inspirations like Peaches, Joan Jett, Ani Difranco and my mom ha. It’s sort of an inner monologue in my head of being so frustrated with not being taken seriously and then just blowing up and demanding a seat at the table, you know?

Tell us about the video, do the themes of the single transfer to the video? 

All the credit really goes to Jay Bartlett on this one. We sent him and a few others the song to see what they would come up with, and Jay came back to us with this idea and he nailed it. Also, our friend Kristen Hunt the leading lady did such a badass job. We wanted something as exciting and empowering as the music and I think they executed it perfectly. 

Do you have any behind the scenes stories from the video shoot?

I actually was barely there for any of the shooting ha…but I do remember Scott telling me about the front of the van scene and that Kristen really gave him a run for his money, apparently she was wrestling hardcore. That’s why the shot of Scott’s face rammed up against the window looks so real, think he might of actually been a little pain haha.

Anything else you’d like to add for our readers?

There’s not too much going on at the moment other than trying to keep sane and deal with the current climate. Debut album Without The Eyes is out 28th August and hopefully we will be able to tour our UK dates in September, but I guess we’ll see where the COVID takes us.
