Austrian psych-rock trio Mother’s Cake are gearing up to release their fourth studio album Cyberfunk!, delivering one of the most eclectic records of 2020. We caught up with drummer/backing vocalist Jan Haussels to discuss the band’s their formation, ambitions, how their influences have evolved and more.
Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself and your band.
Hi, my name is Jan! I’m a 32 year old musician currently living in Vienna. I’m also the drummer in Mother’s Cake, a psychedelic, funky rock band based in Innsbruck.
How did the band form and how long have you been together?
We all met 2008 at this private art studio party somewhere in Innsbruck’s more dodgy/ industrial corner and actually kept the drunk promise of the night, to meet up the next day and go jam – never stopped since then!
Can you remember the first time you realised you wanted to make music?
Not vividly, but it happened at some point during our first year together, as I realised that the three of us had chemistry and made this really fascinating music together.
Who and what are the band’s main influences?
In the early days we inhaled all kinds of prog and psych rock bands. We dug deep into early 70’s rock and funk and got some wisdom from German krautrock bands. These days it’s much more a case of letting anything surrounding us inspire us to write music.
What do you aim to achieve as a band?
To write our own little chapter that people hopefully remember as unique, fun and mesmerising to listen to.
For those who are yet to see you live, what can they expect from a Mother’s Cake show?
A powerful, infectious and steaming hot performance that wont just allow for some folded arms and gentle head nodding. We’re aiming for the full body experience ;)
What’s next for Mother’s Cake?
Cyberfunk!, our fourth studio album, will drop on 18th September. We are super happy and proud of this one and can’t wait to finally see it out there.
