MUSIC NEWS: Superchunk Announce ‘Misfits & Mistakes: Singles, B-Sides and Strays 2007-2023’ Boxset

Superchunk have announced their new Misfits & Mistakes: Singles, B-Sides and Strays 2007-2023 boxset, due for release on 27th October 2023 via Merge Records.

Their fourth singles compilation is a 4-LP or 2-CD collection, covering their return from hiatus up to present day. Misfits & Mistakes includes 50 songs, 16 of which will be on physical media for the first time. The release houses non-album tracks, demos, and cover songs sourced from 7-inches, compilations, and previously internet-exclusive artifacts. The boxset will also contain extensive liner notes by vocalist/guitarist Mac McCaughan (with additional notes from Laura Ballance).

“This collection covers a lot of ground, from heavy touring years to a pandemic where we made singles and an album at home,” says McCaughan. “One difference between this comp and our first three is that this time span completely falls in the digital age; the distance from a final mix to everyone hearing it is shorter than ever. I’ve always liked artists who are prolific—throwing out singles in between albums when you least expect it. A surprise release from your favourite band is one of the few things that can still bring a little excitement to what can seem like an endless deluge of “content” (puke). Hopefully the wild swings between lo & hi fi and originals and covers on this comp still allow for some coherence and, more importantly, convey what’s FUN about this punk rock thing.”

To celebrate Superchunk have shared a rare B-side called Sunny Brixton, which originally featured on a UK-only 7-inch Learned To Surf, released in 2011 by One Four Seven Records.

“Sunny Brixton was about staying with our friend and soundman Joe Hickey when he lived in a group house in Brixton in the ‘90s; it’s all true,” McCaughan adds.

Superchunk will return to the UK and Europe later this year, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of On the Mouth. See them live at one of the following dates:
