If you have ever heard of the computer game League Of Legends, then you will no doubt have heard the song Legends Never Die, a track by New York band Against The Current, which had at the last count over 626 million streams on Spotify alone. Against The Current vocalist Chrissy Costanza recently released her first solo effort in VII, a seven track EP filled with cinematic rock and pop that pushes her music in a new direction.
But, What If I Fly? has a nice, mellow keyboard opening, before Costanza adds her trademark high-quality, instantly recognisable vocals. It has a good combination of rock and pop elements to keep the listener interested. Next up is 7 Minutes In Hell, the first single from the EP and a collaboration with VOILA, a band that Costanza will be touring with in November on their Spin The Bottle Tour across the UK and Europe. It really is the perfect collaboration and is one of the heaviest tracks on the album, as Costanza shares vocal duties with Luke Eisner – it’s the standout track on the EP for us.
Pick Your Poison begins with distorted vocals and has a very catchy chorus of “Are we going down with the ship now/I try to swim but we both drown,” while If Looks Could Kill is a much slower song to start off with, before exploding into some thought provoking lyrics and foot-tapping guitar work.
You’d Be Right leans more towards the pop side of music, however the electronic drums seem a little overproduced, with normal service resumed on Some Like It Hot. The last track on the EP is I Tried To Act Your Age, ending the record on a high note. This one is more of a piano-led, pop-rock ballad showcasing Costanza’s impressive vocal range.
While Against The Current influences can be heard in just about every track on the EP, VII has also given Costanza the space to reinvent herself and move into a new musical realm.
