EP REVIEW: Rory Indiana – Ruling Class Crooks

Last month Brighton rockers Rory Indiana released their sophomore EP Ruling Class Crooks. The self-released record, which was recorded and produced by Chris Coulter (Arcane Roots, EMP!RE) had it’s accompanying launch show at Brighton’s Haunt on Easter Friday as the band bring their current UK tour to a close.

With a number of UK festival appearances already under their belt the friends, who grouped together during their time at University, released their debut EP Empiricism last September and have since been mixing together sounds from a number of genres to create an infectious noise which has been developing and growing to bigger and better things.

Ruling Class Crooks is the second release from the band and at only four tracks long it leaves you wanting more. Opening with the title track, there is no shadow of a doubt that this EP is going to be one loud and guitar laden ride. The strong introduction instantly has echoes of Arcane Roots and flows seamlessly into the vocals, which fans of the band will know well.

Leave Me brings more pop sounds to the EP, but not without the rock edge. It has a fun bounce-a-long beat throughout, that gets into your head instantly and is impossible to resist. The EP’s penultimate track again brings something new and this time provides the opportunity to expose lead singer Rory’s vocals. Burnout Behaviour opens with vocals over guitar, as opposed to visa versa, and the soulful rock sound comes through and continues to the very end.

Closing track, Self Sabotage, has a real passion to it and rounds off the EP perfectly, whilst leaving you wanting more from the band. Lyrically and musically it is probably the standout track on Ruling Class Crooks. The band should be very proud of what they have put together, and how in just four short tracks they manage to get across their sound and love for what they do.

There is sure to be a lot more to come from Rory Indiana and we can’t wait to see and hear it.

8/10
